When testing for gas in diesel fuel, make sure the contaminated mixture is well covered. You will need a flame torch, gloves, safety glasses and a container.
While the mixture remains closed, open it up at once and do a quick swipe with the flaming torch, if there is a quick flame, then definitely there is gasoline in the diesel.
How to test for water in diesel fuel
The only way to detect water in a fuel tank was by use of the water detecting paste. This method only detects the presence of water at the bottom of the fuel tank.
This method fails to detect water that is suspended on top of the fuel tank. Fuel test #W-1 is a new method that tests for 200ppm of suspended water in jet fuel, diesel fuel and gasoline.
This method will make you aware of suspended water in the fuel that is at the point of dropping out.
The kit has one 2-dram glass vials that contain reaction powder and one transfer pipette. Anyone can do the test as it is very simple.
- Get rid of the capsule from the test vial.
- Use the pipette to take a sample of the fuel.
- Fill the fuel into the vial first , ¾ full.
- Open the capsule by pulling off the colored half. The clear potion of the capsule is the catalyst.
- Pour the white powder into the vial that contains fuel. Put the lid back and shake for like 10 seconds.
- Put the vial on the table. This enables the mixture to settle and check it out for results. 100-200ppm water should reveal pink spots inside the white powder.
- More than 200ppm, then all the powder will turn to pink. If the fuel contains more than 200pm, then you will need to take the necessary action.
How to test for algae in diesel fuel
Most fuel contaminations come in two perspectives. That is biology and chemistry. Solving these issues with the wrong solutions might just further increase the problem.
The most common problem is usually an accumulation of water in the fuel, resulting in a ‘bio mass’ known as diesel sludge. Diesel sludge looks like algae.
To test for algae in fuel you can use a Microbe Test Kit . the test kit is simply a dip slide. It’s a plastic tube attached to the cap.
Insert the slide into the fuel then re-insert the cap and put it back into the cover tube. After 24 to 48 hours, you should see if you have algae in your fuel or not.

Fuel quality can be tested by carrying out an ignition quality test. High-quality ignition is defined by the start of combustion.
Fuels that have poor ignition quality will result in a long delay in ignition. If the ignition time is prolonged, it means the fuel contains some impurities.
Testing ethanol content in fuel
Make a permanent line on a test tube about two inches from the bottom. Fill water in the test tube to this line and feel the tube with gasoline to the top.
Cover the tube, shake it and let the mixture settle. Ethanol and water will separate from each other after mixing.
If you observe the water level has increased, then the fuel contains ethanol.
